Anti-lag is a strategy where the turbocharger's delay in boost delivery is countered by forcefully spinning the turbo when the throttle is closed. A traditional anti-lag system operates by injecting fuel and retarding ignition timing, causing explosions in the exhaust manifold instead of the combustion chamber, thus driving the turbine without generating engine power. Alternative systems can drive fresh boosted air from the compressor into the turbine for a less violent application.
